I agree with you there, that's why I created a few command line perl
scripts to do some of the boring work when I joined Tradesignals.com
first. Cut down the time to update the site by almost half :)
I'm refering to the perceived notion that the "dull" terminal type
interface that telnet presents will both frighten off and raise a mental
barrier for some students. If they had a Mandrake workstation to play
with they have about 6 window managers to play with. Even with all that
choice, I still use Window Maker.. *shrug*

hehe.. I used a clone of ed in first year. Did several projects in it
too..  :)
