I've found part of my problem I believe.
My /dev/mouse link was pointing to ttys0 so I deleted it and created a link
to /dev/psaux.
I'm getting some very erratic mouse behaviour now. The pointer is stuck to
the top of the screen but it does respond to mouse movements a bit by moving
horizontally along the top of the screen.
I've tried shutting down gpm but it hasn't made any difference.
I've tried different protocols such as Microsoft, PS/2, IMPS/2.
Anybody got any further suggestions ?
I just have the Protocol and Device lines in my config file.
Many thanks,
Bligh
