What does /dev/modem point at?
ls -l /dev/modem
Keep an eye on /var/log/messages as it might tell you more.
You can also pul up a terminal in kppp, try to enter a few modem
commands,
atz0
ati4
Does anything come up?
Run harddrake and there should be a modem config tool there somewhere..
