Renicing X to a negative number makes it a lot more responsive.
Presuming you have enough ram, but if your CPU is a little slow this can
help the responsiveness of most GUI apps.
ps auxw|grep X
renice -10 <PID>
Console apps run slower (tarring a dir will take longer), but for
browsing sessions, it makes everything just that little bit nicer!
Note, you have to be root to do this.
