Ever since I started getting back into computers - after I left school I
lost touch - I've bemoaned the fact that I missed the phreaking years. It
must have been wild back then, especially in the States, surfing Ma Bell and
all that. But I wonder if the chance is going to present itself again? First
there was the Apacatel exploit, which pretty much means you can walk into an
Alcatel DSL modem and do watcha like. With that, it's quite possible we
might see a resurgence of shady characters hanging around telco boxes with
razor blades and multi-coloured boxes. And on The Register today we have the
chap driving around comfortably in his Saturn, with a Lucent antennae on the
roof and a laptop with a wireless network card, scanning and picking up
wireless networks that are open to the world. This looks like FUN!
