A little progress, thanks to suggestions and URLs from Dan O'Regan,
but still no sign of Ethertap. This is supposed to be in the 2.2
kernel, but despite having mknod'd tap0 - tap15, I'm still getting
a modload error (RH 6.2; Kernel 2.2.14-5.0).
Where is the ethertap module (presumably an object file)?
The other oddity is that although the full diald HOWTO mentions
PAP, it does not explain how the connect script can be told to
disregard anything to do with username/password prompts and to
go for PAP instead. The diald doc does not mention this either.
