How come everything I post is OT?
I thought Cork users keeping an eye on Irish broadband solutions might be
interested in the latest from Chorus on their "Powernet" product (wireless
Internet access). Stuart Jack from Chorus rang me today to tell me that
Chorus had a fire in their premises in Limerick, and this has delayed the
rollout of their broadband (leased lines; don't ask) and Powernet services.
They expect to roll them out in eight weeks now, which is the end of April
to you and me. Previously, the expected rollout was the end of March. I was
under the impression that they had to roll it out before March to avoid
losing their licence, but Stuart tells me that the fact they're already up
and running in Limerick might negate that. Possibly. I remain sceptical
about Chorus, but I have to admit that Stuart's phone call was a pleasant
surprise. Or maybe I'm even more naive than previous experience has
proved... (Watch now, there's no Chorus premises in Limerick... :)
Just so's I'm not completely off-topic, I'd appreciate any recommendations
for someone to buy networking gear off (a NIC, a hub and some of that wire
stuff I'll need to put it altogether). Not a store where they sell the
nearest or most expensive products - I'm talking to _you_, Compuland, for
selling me a sucky modem - but the _right_ ones. Rare I know, but there has
to be someone, surely? Why is that on-topic? Because after trying Moz.8 I'm
finally biting the bullet and flipping over to RHL on the desktop. But I'm a
wuss, so I'm going to run a Windows box too. And a Powerbook. Hence the need
for good advice.
By the by, exactly what are this crowd on Agenda going to say about Linux?
It's not going to be embarassing, is it?
