Thanks for all the info guys,
I think I might bite the bullet and buy a Mitsubishi.
Way I look at it, I can upgrade the PC as often as I like,
but a good monitor should last years. hopefully.
Dave.

Dave,
To actually answer your question, rather than shooting poison arrows at you
on your first post see below;
First read: http://www.linux.ie/community/ILUGfaq.php on mailing policies to
keep 'lil auld Adam happy in his kennel.
As far as the price difference in monitors go, check the specs. If you are
not familiar with Monitors & Models, ignore fancy model names, just look
for the following;
Warranty - 1 year is min 3 years is v.good 5 years is
excellent
Price circa IR 380 would be excellent for a Trinitron or
circa IR300 would get a std. monitor
It is always worth it to pay an extra 70 quid or so
to go Trinitron
CRT Screen? What is it? Goldfish Bowl - BAD! 2'Deg Curve - messy
Flat Screen -Minimum Natural Flat Screen -
Preferable
CRT Tube - Go for anything with xxxTRON in it! (DiamondTron,
Trinitron, etc.)
It means it is a Sony Trinitron tube which is BEST
(2 black lines across the screen at 25% + 75% is
normal
(only other tube recommended is LLyama's
Grille-Aperature/Masking Technology)
Dot Pitch For a 19", .27 is unacceptable .25 is good .24 is
Trinitron terrority
.22 is Super Trinitron or Mask Technology.
(Dot pitch makes a big difference in apps esp Cad,
etc.)
Refresh Rate 1280 x 1024 at 100 Hz with a max. res. of 1600x1200 at 75Hz
is what you are looking for, for stable screen and not
to incur headaches, migraines, throwing monitor out window and going
generally blind while concrentrating on
something onscreen.
Advertising: Dont be swayed with built-in USB Hub's or speakers,
multi-conn (Digital, RGB, etc.)type monitors or any
colour calibration software, they just make up for the monitor itself being
crap!
Look on the Hardware Vendors list on the
http://www.linux.ie for suppliers. Tell them Santa sent you! :)
As for the Graphics card..nearly anything nVidia is supported (unless freaky
chipset!) and I know the TNT2 is supported for Linux. You will find a
graphics servers(SVGALIB) for it no probs.
Try this place: http://www.nvidia.com/Products/OpenLinuxDwn.nsf/096readmefaq
Also, if you are stuck for any RPM's look in http://www.rpmfind.net (THANKS
STEVE!!!!)
Cheers & Best O'Luck,
James.

Guess I should introduce myself, as I have been lurking in the shadows for a
while!
Dave Barrow is the name, Open Uni student, trying to cast off the evil spell
of Mr. Gates for a while now, and find this mailing list very useful for all
sorts of info. I am dual-booting SuSe and win..spit.
I am going to go the whole hog and invest in the pro edition as I am running
a watered down copy off the cover of a mag. As part of my new image I am in
the process of buying a monitor, new hard disk and graphics card. Why am I
telling you all this? partly to introduce myself and also to get some info
hopefully.
Does anyone know why peats are charging £300 (inc vat) for a 19" Studioworks
Monitor and it is 377.95 (inc vat) for the same monitor in Marx computers ?
(well his is a goldstar I don't know if there is a difference).
I think there was a thread a while back with peats mentioned in a not so
good light.
Also I am getting a PowerColor TNT2 64 32MB (NVIDIA) graphics card that is
listed as linux compatible. However after a nose around in the SuSe database
I can't find it listed. If anyone knows anything - most grateful.
Thats it.
All info would be gratefully recieved, and bear in mind I will probably
annoy you guys from time to time as I am a newbie to Linux :)
Dave.
