I'm using XFree86 with the usual 102-key uk layout, and AltGr is
functioning nicely as dead-key.
Combine AltGr with:
; fada
' circumflex
# grave
[ umlaut
] tilde
followed by a normal letter, and you'll get accents. You'll get other
special characters by usuing AltGr plus various other keys,
e.g. AltGr-. gives me a bullet character. As ever, your mileage may
vary.
Jamie Zawinski's xkeycaps application is pretty good for showing
graphically how the keyboard is set up.
