Thanks everyone...it has (more or less) worked. But for reasons of stupidity
and fatique that I rather not go into (been slapping my forehead for the 
last day over it) I *removed* /dev/hdb1 and /dev/hdb3.i.e. I used rm /dev/hdb1 .
Has anyone any ideas on reversing this act of schmuckness?
