install.sh is a script generated by the configure script, or should
already be in the tar ball.. Are you sure you don't have to run
"autoconf" or some other tool first?

No idea about autoresponders, but you should use /usr/local/ as a prefix
when installing your own software from source. That wat, binary RPMs go
in /usr/ and things don't clobber each other. Of course, you have to be
wary of the fact you may have two versions of one piece of kit
installed.
