I used an Iomega CD-RW in work with an early 2.4 kernel. I used the
usb-storage driver, afair. I followed the docs on getting usb up and
running and had no real problems. I'm not saying that it worked out
of the box - I did compile a custom kernel - however it's quite
possible that it will work out of the box with Mandrake 8.0. Afair, I
recorded at 2x rather than 4x which the drive was capable of - I
didn't investigate further 'cause my CD was copied at that stage :)
