Cool, thanks. Unfortunately on the machines in question it says
(among other things)
hosts: files nis dns
networks: nis files dns
Example: boxes A and B are on a home lan connected to a server C which
runs demand-dial out to UTVip. I log into box a and type telnet B. The
/etc/hosts on all boxes has entries for all boxes using their LAN IP
addresses...but the telnet cmd still triggers the demand dialer, and
won't bring up the login prompt until it has futilely queried the DNS
for a LAN address. Why isn't it resolving from the /etc/hosts?
