Hi Cain,

It would be worth your while having a look at CorkWAN website,
CorkWan - http://www.corkwan.org
Corkwan mailing list
Corkwan at tech-mad.org
http://zeus.jtlnet.com/mailman/listinfo/corkwan_tech-mad.org

Due to some license 'issues' and other obstacles, CorkWAN is not yet live,
but I am sure you can quickly get up to speed from this website

Cheers,
J.

Subject: [CLUG] Delurk and broadband

I've been lurking here a while, and seeing as my wife and I are moving to
Cork soon (we already have a place in Douglas) I guess it's time to delurk
and introduce myself.

I work for a US company, develop (mostly) in Linux, and work remotely. I've
been living in Wicklow for the last 18 months, the missus is off to UCC for
the next couple of years, hence the move to Cork.

Now onto the purpose of my mail. I spoke to someone at ESat who said they're
rolling out DSL to three exchanges in Cork (Churchfield and Quaker road in
Oct, and Cork central in Dec). Can someone tell me where these exchanges are
(poss' in relation to Douglas)?

Chorus told me that they'd be rolling their cable modem service out in Sep.
They don't have much of a rep here in Wicklow though, does anyone know any
inside gos' on that?

Eircom won't give me anything other than "sometime next year" for I-Stream.

I guess I'll have to stick to ISDN for the time being. But, has anyone
considered the possibility of setting up a wireless net something like the
Canberra Linux user Group setup http://www.air.net.au/. It could be an
alternative if the broadband rollout is patchy. Spreading A business DSL
connection between 4 or 5 users with wireless links would probably drop the
price to be comparative to I-Stream (whenever that comes).

L&k Cain

P.S. Some pointers on the good pubs in Cork wouldn't go astray either! ;^)
