Traditionally, all lowercase, max 8 characters, usually initial followed

Nothing to stop you but I wouldn't want to have to type it every time I
login, and I wouldn't want my login directory to be /home/peter.flynn

The pedants would like to see email addresses divorced from login names.
There are good reasons for this, but <userid at host> is the default, I
think.
