Not knowing anything about the app, here's some things to try:
1. enable logging and see what the program sends to the modem. This would be
inside gnome-ppp and I don't know if it supports logging.
2. Add "m2" to the init string sent to the modem. This'll turn on the modem's
internal speaker so you can hear exactly what it's dialing. Listen for the
pause/numbers.
