Apparently as part of the forced security upgrade for MSN Messenger (you now
have to be using version 5.0 or later, or a later version of windows
messenger) linux clients may no longer be able to connect to the msn
messenger service. Although most linux clients now use version 8 of the
protocol (the version needed to connect) there was speculation as to whether
microsoft would take the oppurtunity to ban unofficial clients. It seems
today that this could indeed be true, as you get this message if you log in
using an unofficial client (I tried using latest versions of gaim and amsn):
13:13:39] .NET Messenger Service Staff says:
You are running a version of messenger that requires an immediate security
update. Please visit http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx to complete
the update.
