[CLUG] Setting default proxy

[CLUG] Setting default proxy

How do you setup a default proxy on a linux system that all console
applications will use? I heard there's an environment variable but I'm not
sure what it is. Would prefer to use proxy detection script rather than the
proxy ip number and host because this is more reliable (am sure it goes to a
different proxy than the one I'm using), although any working solution would
be good at this stage.
