I've some scripts in python if you want, not too fancy,
I'm writing a largescale distributed one in java as
we speak, for process by process I'd look at monit,
http://www.tildeslash.com/monit/, which will look at services.

It's also worth while using watchdog
http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/system/daemons/watchdog/
, in the event of the
box locking up it'll do an automatic reboot.
