If you are replacing a network card and not touching the setting then it
just a matter of replacing the NIC and making sure that the correct
module is loaded to support the card.
i think you will have to edit /etc/modules
and add the module name to the list if you want it to load up upon
booting.
if it is a:
3com -> 3x59c
intel --> eepro100 or e100
realtek --> 8139too
