Seconded. wvdial is cool. Download it (and wvdialconfig).
wvdialconfig sniffs around, finds your modem, pokes it with
AT command and configures /etc/wvdial.conf which you then
edit to add the phone number, login, and password in the
places provided. Then you just type wvdial and it connects.
Needs a Ctrl-C or SIGINT to kill it cleanly.
