When I heard about the Novell buyout of Suse , I really could see a
train wreck coming, as you have described. A great pity - Suse had
such a good reputation and mindshare, especially in Germany, as you
rightly point out.
Why they agreed to sell out to a past-their-sell-by-date company like
Novell, is beyond me - they should have sold out to IBM instead - but
that's just my personal opinion on it.
