If you want to play about with Linux, you could try
Knoppix or one of the other live bootable distros.
I have a fairly recent Knoppix CD if you want a
copy?
For a hard-drive installation, most people reckon
that the RPM based distros like Fedora/Redhat,
SUSE and Mandrake are easy for beginners.
The latest SUSE is on the current issue of
Linux Format magazine.
