I don't think it dumps to anywhere other than standard syslog and in
turn into /var/log/messages. However if this isn't giving you enough
information you can call it by hand instead of the init script and tell
it to print debug information:
/usr/sbin/hald --verbose=yes
or even just add that to the start() section of the SysV init script.
What's the problem with it anyway? Weird hardware? Funky errors?
