It turned out that auto.master had /net enabled for no good reason.

I think it's symptomatic of the fact that no distribution properly
caters for laptop installation yet. It's not long since FC *by default*
tried to start CUPS on a laptop when there was no printer connected,
resulting in a lengthy delay and copious error messages. You only have
to look at the wifi detection and connection heuristics on a Mactop to
see how far behind the game Linux is. There must be a couple of dozen
things that distros do because they assume you're installing a server.
It took the install-tool gurus many years to recognise that some people
wanted Linux as a personal workstation; it seems to be taking them an
unconscionably long time to recognise that people want it on laptops
too.
