I assume you want to be able to dial into your machine.
If so, start with the Serial HOWTO.  You should find
it at /usr/doc/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO.  Also available at
http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Serial-HOWTO.html
