I had huge problems upgrading too, then I followed the docs at
http://www.sfu.ca/~yzhang/linux/samba/index.html
which installed samba by creating an RPM of it from a source tar.gz file
and that worked with the old smb.conf I had.
'Course, this only applies if you're running redhat/have rpm installed.
