Ah. OK. Umm. Obviously there is no standard signal to say
"text 24x80 mode please" that all VGA cards will understand.
That said, it could be the X server. On the tecra 780 that I use, X
completely refuses to work under linux, displaying exactly the fade-out
stuff that you describe. However, with exactly the same X server along with
exactly the same XF86Config file, it works fine when the system is booted
into freebsd. Go figure.
Eww. Kernel signalling? I have the latest FreeBSD, maybe I should try
it. Wrong list, I know, but what's it like nowadays...it was pretty
rough last time I tried it...installation was a pile of crap,
obviously written by someone who had heard installation procedures
described but had never actually seen one (a bit like early Linux
installs, come to think of it, asking questions that don't get
explained until later, when you've made the wrong choice... :-)
