How did you set it up? I found pppconfig worked for me.

Anyway, check the debug options for pppd (in /etc/ppp/options) and see
what you get, you should see a discussion of LCP packets and options being
accepted (ACK) and unaccepted (NAK).

If that's not happy, make sure you don't have /etc/ppp/pap-secrets or /etc/ppp/chap-secrets (assuming you're on iol/indigo and using a script
to dial in).
