[ILUG] urgh... and rh6.0

i don't know when it is! one clock says 7, the othe 8, and the
last 9. ack!

anyway, gnome rocks. finally got rh6.0 installed this afternoon and
have all sorts of silliness going here. why do i have an earthrise
for a bg image in my xterm (er, eterm?)? because i can!

couldn't get the hd install to work (caught that hint on the list
after the install, ah ewell). so i installed via ftp from an
nt box. i was the only one using it (and then just for ftp)
and i had to reboot it 4 times through the course of the install.
why?!?!?! dunno. system load hung around 15%, and after about 5 minutes
the mouse would stop responding and it would lock like... a
microsoft product. honestly i must have done something wrong
to it - they can't suck that bad.

anyway, 4 reboots, and another tweak of the redhat insmod
program (i must have downloaded slightly different versions
of 6.0, didn't someone here mislabel a rawhide release as
6.0? maybe someone else did the same.) turns out you don't
need the mount command. whoever knew true could be such a useful
program?

x11amp didn't work at first. dumped core. was really annoyed.
downloaded beta. didn't crash, just moaned that it couldn't open
audio. turned off esd, worked fine but the five billion
sounds i had enlightenment and gnome spitting out were eeriely
silent. was sad. read the shitty docs. went to preferences
with the right mouse button. enabled esd output plugin that the
docs didn't mention. was happy. i can now listen euro trash
dance music *and* to frivolous ui sounds.

ah....

what else...

slashapp kills the panel, and generally has pissed me off. don't like the
way new launcher apps and applets pop up immediately to the right
of the main menu. the games are annoyingly addictive and should be
policed by the fda, batf, and other letters.

oh, and this is completely uneditted, netlag between here and the
states is rivalling that nt box for lack of response time.

haven't tried kde, gnome's too fun just yet. anyone have any news
on it? any graphical way to control esd, or just esdctl?

kevin
