Don't forget that Solaris/Aix/other ancient Unices, have been around for
donkeys years, since before perl was even a glimmer of an idea on Larry Wall's
tongue, and they don't seem to think it's a good idea to add new stuff.
FreeBSD doesn't come with any useful shell as a default, just /bin/sh (yeah I
know it's useable), so the first thing I have had to do with my FBSD boxen is to
compile bash, lynx, samba, X (there are packages for that though), squid, etc.
I prefer to build them though, than have all the shite rpm stuff foisted on me,
so I get stuck with all the annoying dependencies. For example, try to remove
sendmail and build it from source on a redhat box with the fetchmail rpm on it.
Oh, and don't cheat by using --nodeps. Or remove fetchmail, nmh, and sendmail, and then build sendmail from sources. Then try to install anything that wants
sendmail from an rpm.
I hate package dependencies. It drives me mad.
