Someone was asking for feedback on upgrading to RedHat 6.0 from earlier
versions, so here's mine.
I had RedHat 5.2 with KDE installed (downloaded the RPMS from
ftp.kde.org). Although the documentation that comes with the RPMS for
5.2 explicitly states that you should uninstall KDE before upgrading, I
didn't see this until after I'd actually done it.
KDE ran mostly okay after upgrading, except konsole which started
complaining about missing fonts. This was a real pain (the only X based
application I need to use regularly is Netscape, the rest are all console
based). What's more, the README file that konsole recommends reading
isn't available either with the RPMS that come with 6.0 or the RPMS that
you can download from the RedHat updates site. Downloading the source
and following the instructions in the named file solved the problem.
Frankly I think it's a bit sucky that I have to go through all that hassle
when I'd already downloaded the RPMS. I'm a geek, so it wasn't too bad
but to the ordinary user it could be a bit intimidating.
