[ILUG] Connecting to Tinet with Linux

[ILUG] Connecting to Tinet with Linux

Dear Linux users,

I'm connecting to tinet with SuSe 6.1 with limited success. I'm using kppp
which comes with kde rather than ppp (mainly because I haven't figured out
how to go back into text mode after logging-out from kde). I have two problems.

(a) Often unable to connect. Below is log. I've set settings like modem
timeout, pppd timeout, pre-init delay and post-init delay to 90 seconds.
However it seems there's a LCP timeout of 30 seconds.

Aug  4 22:10:45 earth pppd[968]: pppd 2.3.5 started by david, uid 500
Aug  4 22:10:45 earth pppd[968]: Using interface ppp0
Aug  4 22:10:45 earth pppd[968]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS0
Aug  4 22:10:45 earth pppd[968]: sent [LCP ConfReq id=0x1 <magic 0xea736bc> <pcomp> <accomp>]
Aug  4 22:11:15 earth pppd[968]: LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
Aug  4 22:11:15 earth pppd[968]: Connection terminated.
Aug  4 22:11:16 earth pppd[968]: Exit.

(b) pppd unexpectedly terminates, usually after a few minutes. Below is log.
Modem just hangs-up.
