I've a three month contract in Dell doing some big Sun systems migration.
I got my machine yesterday. A Dell Precision 410. Why am I telling you lot
this ?
Because it's the best damn desktop machine I've ever used. And I've used
damn big Sun and HP machines.
It's a well built & designed dual PentiumIII 450, with 512MB RAM. It's a
3DLABs based Diamond FireportGL in the AGP slot, driving a 21" monitor, and
a Adaptec AIC-7880 & Adaptec AIC-7890/1 on the motherboard, and a pair of
9.1GB U2W LVD drives in it, and a 40x SCSI CDROM drive. 3c905B on the
motherboard (linux says it's on IRQ 19 - how is that?). That all sounds
nice & expensive, but is it good ?
Yup. Even doing parallel compiles, Enlightenment in 1600x1200 is lightning
fast. The screen refreshes are always instant. The key delay is non
existant, even when loaded - my 233Mhz Optiplex with a 16MB TNT & 128SDRAM
did have problems with this. MetroX OpenGL supports the 3DLabs chipset, bar
that, I'd have to wait till XF86 4.0 for hardware support.
And what's the cutest feature ? It comes with boxed RedHat Linux 6.0 & a
90 support from Linuxcard. Price ? At £4100 ex. VAT, that's not cheap, but
still...(it's $4300 ex tax in the US for the same system). Check out the
Precision range. Even if you aren't going to buy them, it's nice to
dream...
