Right. I think this bears repeating. Several times.

1. LILO and the MBR

When installing LILO, install it to your root partition and use fdisk to set 
it to be active. That way, whenever something rewrites the MBR (Windows, 
drive geometry remappers etc) the worst you have to do is use fdisk (any 
fdisk, even that POS you get with Windows) to set the correct partition to 
be active.

2. Installing new kernels.

Take your working kernel. Copy it. Cause LILO to default to the copy with an 
extra entry (new) to point to newly compiled kernels. That way if you make a 
mess of it, you can always fall back to your previous kernel. Once you are 
happy with your new kernel, copy it onto the default image.
