I had that kind of problem here when I changed the drives on my server
(added an IDE drive). It
wouldn't boot lilo anymore, and none of the rescue disks had (that I could
find) aha7xxx support.
Toms Root Boot worked, but it won't run lilo on a 2.2 kernel for some
strange reason. In the end
I did something like:

dd if=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.11 of=/dev/fd0

then took that floppy to another machine with linux, and ran
rdev /dev/sda1 /dev/fd0

and booted from that. Now the machine is behaving itself :)
