I have seen AOL 3.0i 16bit running using WINE. It was a very slow but got the
job done. That version also has its own built in browser so you will not need
IE to get on the web. There is another way to get at you AOL stuff though the
web.
There are two address you will need
1 ) http://toc.oscar.aol.com
This is a java based instant messager .....which will run on any java enabled
web browser.
2) http://netmail.web.aol.com
This will let him collect his mail from AOL. It's a hotmail type interface.
(Supports upto 128bit encryption if your browser supports.
