On my Suse 6.1 (2.2.5) setup the boot-up claimed to have detected a serial port
which then didn't work. I fixed this by taking a look at 
	/etc/rc.d/Serial
and uncommenting one line relating to "manual configuration" or something.
Running
	Serial start
prints out similar messages to those on bootup, but after that my
serial ports worked.
