I'm using MySQL here. The license isn't completely GPL, but it's close
enough. It integrates
with Php and a few other things (like ODBC) so it's happy like that.
Admin: Change the root password, spend a day finding out how to add a
user.. then move
to another machine <g>.
It's useable anyway. And the SQL seems to be generally standard.
Postgresql is better I think,
but bigger and harder to get working (IIRC).
