I had the same problem. I had a look at the source code, looking at the
read-only variable, and saw that it tries to create a lock file in the mail
directory and if it can't create the lock file, sets the mailbox to readonly.
The problem was that (although it had write acccess to the mail file), it
didn't have write access to the directory. A quick chmod on the directory
solved it.
