[ILUG] Off Topic

Well melissa did require the very same stupidity.
Outlook warns you about opening .doc files.
Then word warns you about executing macro's.

This virus has already hit MS in Dublin.
Yesterday the entire MS network in dublin and every machine in the facility
had to be shut down for 2 1/2 hours.

The virus mail contain was formatting was cleaver. It address you my name.
it was signed by some one you knew (it came form some one you knew).

In contained a zip file that contained an .exe called "explore". I assume
this was so that it would get passed minesweeper type things.

It is like melissa in that it was targeted at exchange and used the office
development API to propagate (it actually looked at your address book).

There is some suggestion (from instences i have heard of) that it
intercepted messages you receive and sent the virus to those people rather
then just random users in your address book.

So yes it's really and yes you have to be pretty daft to get a virus but not
really since this virus pretended rather cleaverly to be some one you knew.
Very often I open up bianary attachments if I know the person. That's why i
keep the very latest version of anti-virus software loaded.

Doesn't sound like a Melissa variant to me. Sounds like a fairly simple
trojan accompanied by a little social engineering. Opening an unknown
document
and letting it run macros is bad enough, but if you're stupid enough to run
an
unknown Windows executable . . . . . .

Kindest regards,

Niall
