root at linux.ie burst across the net:
>about the ilug splintering into smaller more local lugs...
>>I think its all very well to have local groups of people to meet
>up with and chat about linux, socialise etc.
>But will the focus and energy get diluted? I honestly don't
>know. It might be a good thing, or it might be a bad thing.
this debate is getting inane. i'm sorry but whether or not the ilug
splits is completely irrelevant to whether or not there are regional
websites. it's a web site! it's the people that splinter, web pages
are just patterns on disks.
personally i think that regional web sites could help increase competition
and encourage people to develop more content. the www.linux.ie site could
just be links and highlights of the cream of the crop. slashdot seems
popular, and yet all the links on it's site don't reside at slashdot.org.
i *also* think that being restrictive on things that were acquired via
the community (ie linux.ie), and posting opinions against as root at linux.ie
is much more divisive. it costs the admin of linux.ie to make an A
record for cork.linux.ie. they seem to have the energy to do something
with it, and if they fail, well bummer. but to just be a wall in the
road is doing nothing wrt keeping the group together.
