Hmm but if the machine DID ask for a password there (as mine does), what
is it calling as? ie what pam settings does it use? Why I'm asking is that
the single user prompt NEVER accepts the root password for me, so I always
have to use that init=/bin/sh hack. The 'login' entry in pam.d is
#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_securetty.so
auth required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok
auth required /lib/security/pam_nologin.so
account required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
password required /lib/security/pam_cracklib.so
password required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so shadow nullok use_authtok
session required /lib/security/pam_pwdb.so
and that looks okay... where should I look for the problem here? Is it
using one of the other files for pam settings? It's a RH 5.1 machine,
upgraded to 5.2, and I can't actually remember if it ever worked
correctly...
Thanks,
Gary.
