Yup, I saw this in a Gateway PC my parents bought about 6 months ago.  I
think that passing the 'no-hlt' to the kernel on boot resolved the problem.
I could be wrong about that though.  It was about Chrstmas time when I was
trying to fix the problem (and the machine is on the other side of the
country so I'm not able to check).

Anyway, try searching comp.os.linux.hardware on dejanews.  That's where I
found this solution and some other suggestions.
