[ILUG] Linux on PC or MAC?

A friend of mine wants to run Linux for graphics work.  He wants to use GIMP so
he's going to need a reasonably well specced machine from the RAM point of view
at least.   He's looking for a reasonably priced machine too.   In light of this
he's wondering if he should run Linux on a PC or Mac?   Does the Mac's strength
in Graphics under MacOS translate directly into strength under Linux running
GIMP?   Has anyone run linux on both platforms?  How do they compare?
