Sounds like the cable is the wrong way round. There are too many
possible orientations of a floppy cable. Make sure:
o the correct end is plugged into the motherboard
o it's the right way around
o the correct end is plugged into the floppy drive
o the correct plug is plugged into the floppy drive
o it's the right way around
I believe it's traditional to try every wrong configuration at
least twice before eventually finding the correct configuration.
For added spice, use a floppy drive that only works intermittently.
