When you install red hat 6.x and configure X you have to select a 8bit
colour depth along with your prefered depth (16, 24,32) so that the
initial X test works.
Only problem is that when you restart the machine to boot Linux for the
first time (in runlevel 5) you've got to go into /etc/X11/ to add "-bpp
16" to the X command line.
At least that's how I do it. Because the 8bpp colour definition is
included in XF86CONFIG which is the default it goes into 8bpp when you
restart.
I'm sure Ken wouldn't like to go mucking about in vi in front of
everyone so if anyone can get around this using a gui tool..
