Note that you were not removing eth0, you were removing the 
_default_route_via_eth0.  The question you have to ask is where
is that route coming from?  Check that you don't have DEFROUTE=yes
in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 (if you're running
Redhat).

If you don't fix the root cause, this problem will recur every
time you reboot.
