The O'Reilly book "High Performance Computing", is definally worth a read.
I'd keep away from PVM....people are not developing it any more amd there's 
little point in developing skills in a language which no one developes new 
code with anymore.....unless you want to go into code maintaince!
There is a HPF/f90 compiler out there on the web.....it's free for educational
use...I forget the URL...but it only takes a couple of minuites to find with
altavista.
Have a look at http://www.fftw.org/ .....this will point you in the direction
of more free (good) stuff.
