Doesn't always work. Certainly on non-frame-buffer setups, the scrollback
buffer gets clears when you switch virtual consoles. This happens as
part of X initialisation as it switches over to console 7. Usually I
only get a couple of lines of scrollback when X dies at init, and that's
only because of the stuff that was printed _after_ X switched back to
the text console.
Moral is stick with the re-direct and less method above.
